FASTING ON THE TENTH OF MUHARRAM

DREAM DA'WAH NETWORK PRESENTS :

OBSERVING FAST ON THE DAY OF 'ASHURA
(Tenth of Muharram)

Assalamu alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuhu.
In the name of Allah the most beneficent, the most merciful.
Respectable Brothers and Sisters as we all know we are in the holy month of Muharram, a month which is termed as a sacred month in which we should increase our acts of worship in.
Among the days of Muharram, the Tenth day is known to be a fasting day although we can fast in other days also but the tenth day is somehow special and this is in evidence with the following hadith "Narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) he said: When the prophet came to Al-Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura', he asked them about that and they replied "This is a good day, the day in which Allah rescued Bani Israel from their enemy. So Prophet Musa observed fasting on this day. The Prophet said "We have more claim over Moses (Musa) than you" So, the prophet observed fast on that day and ordered the Muslims to observe fast on that day (Al-Bukhari)

In another narration of the mother of the faithful (Aisha) she said "Later when the fasting of the month of Ramadan was prescribed, the prophet gave up fasting on the day of Ashurah and it became optional for one to observe Fast on it or to leave its saum (fast). (Al-Bukhari)

Both Narrations are of the view that we can fast on the tenth of Muharram but it shouldn't be made compulsory because the prophet later gave up on it when Ramadan was prescribed which made it optional.
In about 3 days time we shall be in the Tenth of Muharram. Kindly endure to fast if you are privileged to do so, may Allah accept our acts of Worship.
We use this medium to remember our brothers and Sisters in the Syrian crisis, May Allah grant them happiness of the Soul and May he count them among the righteous ones.
Wasalamu alaykum warahmatullah wabarokatuhu.

Speaker : Shehu Abdus-Salam Aladodo
(Abu-Ubaydah).
